Vino Is Not Ouzo

I know what you're thinking. Vino is not ouzo? So what? Who cares?

Well, there's a reason why I named my website that. The name takes after the tradition of recursive acronyms in the open-source world. If something in your head just clicked, and you now understand why that makes sense, good for you. If not, read on!

It all started with GNU, or GNU's Not Unix. GNU is a recursive acronym, meaning that the acronym can be expanded, and it includes the word that is the acronym. For example, GNU expands to GNU's Not Unix, and the acronym includes the word GNU itself. Other open-source projects following this convention have popped up as well, including WINE Is Not an Emulator, and the JACK Audio Connection Kit.

So that's all and good, but what does it have to do with Vino and ouzo? I'll tell you, Vino Is Not Ouzo is a recursive acronym for my online alias, Vino.

Oh yeah, and in case you were wondering, "ouzo" is a greek liquor. This is in contrast to my alias "Vino", which is a spanish wine. NOTE: Thank you to Zintheus, who has just informed me that Ouzo is a liquor, not a wine. My bad.

NOTE: It has also just been brought to my attention that GNU has managed to go a step farther. I'm not sure if this qualifies as genius or retardation, but here it is, the name of the GNU replacement for the Unix kernel, "Hurd":

`Hurd' stands for `Hird of Unix-Replacing Daemons'. And, then, `Hird' stands for `Hurd of Interfaces Representing Depth'. We have here, to my knowledge, the first software to be named by a pair of mutually recursive acronyms.
